NCID Policy Statements
NCID's Strategic Plan

At its Board meeting held in November 2007 Board members agreed on nine (9) policy issues that NCID in conjunction with our Agency members will pursue over the next 12 months.

The key issues are:

1.   Education
Issue - There is a lack of available quality education for people with intellectual disability.

2.   Employment
Issue - Lack of opportunities for employment of and career paths for people with intellectual disabilities to participate economically and socially in the life of the Australian Community.

3.   Accommodation
Issue - Many people with intellectual disability are forced to live in inappropriate settings or with families beyond general community expectations.

4.   Family Skill Development
Issue - Families need information and skill enhancement in order to make informed choices and effectively advocate for and support their family members in their decision making.

5.   Health
Issue - People with intellectual disability are less healthy than the general population.

6.   Human Rights, incl Bill of Rights
Issue - There is inadequate constitutional and legal frameworks in Australia for the establishment and protection of rights of people with intellectual disability.

7.   Ageing and Retirement
Issue - The Aged Care system is failing to respond to people with intellectual disability who are reaching retirement age or who are experiencing early onset ageing.

8.   Unmet Need
Issue - There is a significant number of people with intellectual disability who urgently require support services, and assistance is only made available to individuals at the time of crisis.

9.   Leadership by people with intellectual disability

Issue - People with intellectual disability need information and skill enhancement in order to make informed choices and effectively advocate for themselves and others and to support others in their decision making.
